Information for Dr. Galway's patients

There is going to be an exciting change in the fall. I have arranged for Dr. Laura Potter -Cogan to share my practice.  Many of you will already know her from when she worked with me as a medical student 5 years ago. She also worked in our office as a resident for two years.

She will be working extra days in the office so there will be an increased availability to make appointments.  Our style of medical practice is very similar and we both value the relationships we make with our patients.  She is excited to join the practice and meet all of you.

After almost 25 years of providing care to my patients I am finding that i need to make some changes to my workload.  I plan to work in the hospital three or more days per week and will be in the office less often.  In the next year or so I will transition out of the office completely.  Dr. Potter-Cogan will then share the pratice with Dr. Deborah Lisoway, another great family physician that you may have met when she was doing locum work in my office.

It has been an honor to be your family doctor and it is important for me to ensure that you will all be taken care of after I retire.  I am so please that these smart, caring, young physicians have agreed to step in as I step out.  Help me welcome Dr. Laura Potter-Cogan and eventually Dr. Deborah Lisoway to the practice.

OFFICE PHILOSOPHY

We value a harmonious environment for patients and staff. Thank you for contributing to an atmosphere of mutual respect, patience and kindness.

BOOKING APPOINTMENTS

Please try to book non-urgent appointments (routine follow up, prescription refills, test results, paper-work) with your own family physician well in advance. You may book your appointment online through our website, or via telephone. Our staff will ask you the reason for your visit. This confidential information is required to ensure that your appointment is booked appropriately.

At Highland Family Practice, Rapid Access Appointments are available to accommodate new or urgent problems (illness or injury requiring immediate attention). You must call early in the day to book one of these appointments. These are short appointments meant to address one concern. If your regular physician is heavily booked or not available that day, you may be fit in with one of the other clinic physicians.

Our phones are answered starting at 8:30am. Our goal is to support our patients by accommodating urgent concerns with our Rapid Access booking system. If possible, please avoid using walk-in clinics out of convenience. We appreciate that walk-in clinics are useful if a problem develops after office hours or on weekends.

CANCELLATIONS

We would appreciate a minimum of 4 hours notice for appointment cancellations. After a failure to cancel an appointment, we will send you a reminder about the “no show” appointment. After the second “no show” you will be billed privately for the missed visit. **Please note that late arrival for your scheduled appointment will likely result in it having to be rescheduled.

NURSING SERVICES

Blood draws for routine blood work, urinalysis and pregnancy tests, suture removal, liquid nitrogen treatment for plantar warts, ear syringing and more. Generally, these services are available on a first come first serve basis. Register at the front desk on arrival to obtain your spot in line.

PROBLEM LIST

In BC, the standard family doctors visit is 10 minutes long. If the time is used wisely, a lot can be accomplished. If there are several concerns which need to be addressed, it may be necessary to book for more than one visit to address all of your concerns properly. For more complicated concerns, more time may be allotted. Please note that Medical Services Plan does not pay for yearly physicals in healthy adults. If you have a condition requiring a full physical exam, your doctor will let you know.

PRESCRIPTIONS

Prescriptions will not be refilled without a consultation, as we need to review refills of prescriptions with patients to monitor side effects and effectiveness. We will prescribe you enough medications at your visit to last until we need see you again.

NARCOTICS

Our office does not routinely prescribe narcotics until all other treatment options are explored. For pa-tients on long term narcotics, an Opioid Contract is now the standard of care.

TEST RESULTS

If your test results require prompt action, our office will contact you. All other results will be reviewed at your next scheduled appointment. Please remember to ask the doctor for your results. It is your re-sponsibility to know your results.
It’s important that we are able to contact you should we need to follow up a test result. Please advise front staff of any changes in your contact information.

UNINSURED SERVICES

We are often asked to fill out forms or perform medical services that are not covered under the Medical Services Plan. In these instances, you will be billed privately. For a list of these services, please ask the front staff.

ON CALL AND HOLIDAY COVERAGE

If you are admitted to hospital, your doctor or the call group will look after you.

LOCUM COVERAGE

Sometimes your doctor may be unavailable, in which case there may be a locum (temporary doctor) covering for them. This may happen on very short notice. It is not our policy to call and notify patients there will be a locum covering. Please book your appointment with the locum rather than waiting until your regular doctor returns.

QUESTIONS

If you have any questions or concerns about any of the information provided in this letter or about our clinic, please feel free to discuss them with your doctor.

Thank you and WELCOME to our Clinic!
