*IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT*

Highland Family Practice will be temporarily

CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS

starting JANUARY 17 for 4-5 weeks

Doctors and staff will still be working remotely during this time

Most appointments will be by phone, although there is also limited access to in-person appointments at another temporary location.

If you need to book a routine appointment with your doctor during our closure, please book online.

For those who are unable to book online or if you need to see a doctor or nurse in person, there is a temporary phone number and email set up, which will be active from January 17 until our clinic reopens.

Our temporary phone number is (778) 431-0171 and our temporary email is hfp_temp@shaw.ca

Please note: the phone number and email shouldn’t be used for emergencies. If you have an emergent concern, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department.

The phone will be answered Monday – Friday between 9am and 12pm, and from 1pm to 4pm.

Please be patient and kind with us: we are short-staffed and limited to one phone line during our closure.

The email will be checked daily during business hours, requests will be triaged, and a staff member will contact you as soon as possible.

All results will continue to be reviewed, and the doctors will have very similar schedules available for phone appointments.

If you need to have lab work done during our closure, please go to an Island Health lab or a Lifelabs location: unfortunately our nurses are unable to do blood draws or procedures during the closure.

We sincerely apologize for any inconveniences, and look forward to welcoming you back into our renovated clinic!

Information for Dr. Galway's patients

After almost 25 years of providing care to her patients, Dr Galway has transitioned to hospital care only, and no longer sees patients in office. Dr Galway is honoured to have been your family doctor, and has ensured all of her patients will continue to be cared for.

Dr Laura Potter-Cogan had been sharing Dr Galway’s practice over the last year, but has moved to Westward Medical Clinic as of October 2021. She has taken all of her newly acquired patients with her to that practice. The remaining patients of Dr Galway have been transferred to Dr Deborah Lisoway. Dr Lisoway has worked as a locum for our clinic many times over the years and she shares the same values as the other Highland Family doctors. We warmly welcome her to our team!

OFFICE PHILOSOPHY

We value a harmonious environment for patients and staff. Thank you for contributing to an atmosphere of mutual respect, patience and kindness.

BOOKING APPOINTMENTS

Please try to book non-urgent appointments (routine follow up, prescription refills, test results, paper-work) with your own family physician well in advance. You may book your appointment online through our website, or via telephone. Our staff will ask you the reason for your visit. This confidential information is required to ensure that your appointment is booked appropriately.

At Highland Family Practice, Rapid Access Appointments are available to accommodate new or urgent problems (illness or injury requiring immediate attention). You must call early in the day to book one of these appointments. These are short appointments meant to address one concern. If your regular physician is heavily booked or not available that day, you may be fit in with one of the other clinic physicians.

Our phones are answered starting at 8:30am. Our goal is to support our patients by accommodating urgent concerns with our Rapid Access booking system. If possible, please avoid using walk-in clinics out of convenience. We appreciate that walk-in clinics are useful if a problem develops after office hours or on weekends.

CANCELLATIONS

We would appreciate a minimum of 24 hours notice for appointment cancellations. After a failure to cancel an appointment, we will send you a reminder about the “no show” appointment. After the second “no show” you will be billed privately for the missed visit. **Please note that late arrival for your scheduled appointment will likely result in it having to be rescheduled.

NURSING SERVICES

Blood draws for routine blood work, urinalysis and pregnancy tests, suture removal, liquid nitrogen treatment for plantar warts, ear syringing and more. Please call to book any of these services.

PROBLEM LIST

In BC, the standard family doctors visit is 10 minutes long. If the time is used wisely, a lot can be accomplished. If there are several concerns which need to be addressed, it may be necessary to book for more than one visit to address all of your concerns properly. For more complicated concerns, more time may be allotted. Please note that Medical Services Plan does not pay for yearly physicals in healthy adults. If you have a condition requiring a full physical exam, your doctor will let you know.

PRESCRIPTIONS

Prescriptions will not be refilled without a consultation, as we need to review refills of prescriptions with patients to monitor side effects and effectiveness. We will prescribe you enough medications at your visit to last until we need see you again.

NARCOTICS

Our office does not routinely prescribe narcotics until all other treatment options are explored. For patients on long term narcotics, an Opioid Contract is now the standard of care.

TEST RESULTS

If your test results require prompt action, our office will contact you. All other results will be reviewed at your next scheduled appointment. Please remember to ask the doctor for your results.
It’s important that we are able to contact you should we need to follow up a test result. Please advise front staff of any changes in your contact information.

UNINSURED SERVICES

We are often asked to fill out forms or perform medical services that are not covered under the Medical Services Plan. In these instances, you will be billed privately. For a list of these services, please ask the front staff.

ON CALL AND HOLIDAY COVERAGE

If you are admitted to hospital, your doctor or the call group will look after you.

LOCUM COVERAGE

Sometimes your doctor may be unavailable, in which case there may be a locum (temporary doctor) covering for them. This may happen on very short notice. It is not our policy to call and notify patients there will be a locum covering. Please book your appointment with the locum rather than waiting until your regular doctor returns.

QUESTIONS

If you have any questions or concerns about any of the information provided in this letter or about our clinic, please feel free to discuss them with your doctor, nurse, or receptionist.

Thank you and WELCOME to our Clinic!
